Board and Batten

Board and Batten

Rustic Appearance, Effective Protection

Batten and board siding has a beautiful and rustic appearance, while providing homes and commercial buildings with weatherproof and insulating protection. And, with wood options available for every price point, board and batten siding is perfect for almost any commercial or residential building.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re considering board and batten siding for your home or facility:

Vertical siding material selection

Board and batten siding is notable because of all the choices available for every price point—batten and board siding is available in cheaper options such as pine or spruce. For a more luxurious look, red or yellow cedar can be used.

There are several “grades” of wood used for vertical siding that dictate the pricing of all batten and board installations. “Clear heart” is the highest quality—and highest price—and has no imperfections, such as knots or holes. For a more rustic appearance, though, perhaps “select knotty” is a good choice.

A siding contractor will be able to guide you toward the best board and batten siding material for your design specifications and price range.

Proper installation by a professional siding contractor

Every batten and board installation is different. Since there aren’t any standard widths for the boards or battens, there aren’t any standard best practices when installing. The general rule of thumb, however, is to have at least a ½” overlap between every batten and board. The thickness of the entire system needs to be at least 1 ½” thick.

There are two ways to install board and batten siding that provide different design aesthetics. Usually, battens are installed over boards. You can, however, install boards over battens for a more textured appearance.

It is also important to wrap the home or commercial building with some sort of wrap or tar paper to ensure the vertical siding system is watertight and better insulated. A roofing contractor will also add value to your board and batten system by properly fitting flashing around windows, doors and other protrusions for further weatherproofing and insulation. Vertical siding is especially susceptible to water damage at the ends of each board, so it is crucial that your siding contractor coat the rough edges of each board with a waterproof coating.

Wildwood Roofing did a fine job on our roof! Jordan Bertin was great! He was on it from start to finish. Very happy with our new roof.

I chose Wildwood because they had the lowest bid and I was impressed with their webpage, reviews, and prior jobs they show on their website. During the job, they found cedar roofing that was under the old shingles. It cost me an extra to get them removed and it took an extra 2 days over what they stated. Overall, I am happy with the job. My house looks great and had no leaks that I am aware of. After a week after my roof was completed, some of my siding came off where it met the shingles, but they came out and fixed it for me. Some people may care about wanting to have American workers to get the job. The roofers that came to my house, didn’t speak english, played spanish music while working, and most likely from South America. It didn’t bother me, but some people may want to pay for American workers.

Wildwood Roofing did an unbelievable job on my roof. They walked me through how to deal with my insurance company. They told me what to expect on timing and showed up like they said they would. The roof they installed was way better than the roof I had in the past.Even my neighbor (Who’s retired) across the street from me said they did an amazing job.He asked me for their name and number because he wants to do some work with them.Great job Wildwood Roofing and thank you very much for making the entire process painless.Brian Chrisco

Used Wildwood Roofing for the repair of a roof when I was preparing to sell a house in Manchester. Caleb was very responsive to questions regarding the quote and even came out to meet with my insurance claims adjuster to work things together. The work was scheduled and completed on the day they said it would be and the guys were very efficient at getting it done. The company was even responsive after the work to get some paperwork I needed to close on the house. My issue I had (and discovered a month after they had completed their work) was some of the old roofing material was allowed to fall into the attic space. When I was in the attic fixing some issues prior to the sale, I found the material and was a little disgusted it was allowed to fall in where it did.Overall, I would recommend working with this company.
