Elastomeric Roof Coatings For Improved Durability and Weatherability

Elastomeric roof coatings are the surfacing component of the two-part spray polyurethane foam-based (SPF) roofs. For more information about the substrate for SPF roofing systems, visit our polyurea foam page. Elastomeric roof coatings are also commonly used on metal roofs.

Elastomeric roof coatings provide many benefits to the roofing systems they cover, including promoting energy efficiency and durability. They are also simple for a qualified roofing contractor to apply—elastomeric roof coatings are often spray applied, but the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) says that hand and power rollers can be used as well. Your roofing contractor should be able to point you to the right application method for your facility’s roofing system.

Weatherproofing the substrate

Standards for elastomeric roof coatings

Elastomeric roof coatings cover the substrate—either polyurea foam or metal, or sometimes even tar roofs—and protect it from the sun and harmful UV rays, as well as providing waterproofing and abrasion resistance. It forms a durable membrane unlikely to tear or leak. Elastomeric roof coatings additionally provide further fire resistance to the roofing systems it coats. The durability and strength of the roofing system means that you will probably spend less time repairing and replacing your roof, especially if applied correctly. It is important, however, to have your elastomeric roof coatings applied by experienced roofing contractors to ensure the quality and longevity of the overall roofing system.

The National Roofing Contractors Association recommends that all elastomeric roof coatings meet the standards set by ASTM. One such standard, ASTM D6947, regulates coatings used in SPF roofing systems, such as elastomeric polymer coatings. To pass the benchmark set by ASTM, elastomeric roofing coatings must pass a series of tests measuring tear resistance, water absorption, and temperature resistance. These tests are designed to ensure the quality of elastomeric roofing coatings bearing the ASTM D6947 standard. A roofing contractor will be able to guide you toward coating manufacturers that adhere to this—and every other—ASTM standard pertaining to elastomeric coatings.

What Our Customers Say

As the result of a recent storm, I had a few water stains on my bedroom ceiling and some damaged drywall. Mike B came by to do the repair work. First, he mudded in the damaged drywall and then had to find a match to the 29-year-old off-white paint. It took multiple visits but the final result was perfect. He then used some of my three-year-old beige paint to cover the drywall that had two water stains. He expertly blended in my paint to match the existing paint on the wall. Another perfect job.Mike is a true professional. He will analyze the situation, tell the customer what needs to be done and how long it will take. Then, he does just that, expertly. I never saw such an efficient worker who repairs drywall and paints. He is a tribute to Wildwood Roofing.

Audrey Arend

Used Wildwood Roofing for the repair of a roof when I was preparing to sell a house in Manchester. Caleb was very responsive to questions regarding the quote and even came out to meet with my insurance claims adjuster to work things together. The work was scheduled and completed on the day they said it would be and the guys were very efficient at getting it done. The company was even responsive after the work to get some paperwork I needed to close on the house. My issue I had (and discovered a month after they had completed their work) was some of the old roofing material was allowed to fall into the attic space. When I was in the attic fixing some issues prior to the sale, I found the material and was a little disgusted it was allowed to fall in where it did.Overall, I would recommend working with this company.
